I Always Wanted A Black Belt

It’s OK To Dream

Hey, there’s nothing wrong with going after a dream! And the act of doing it, the moment of attaining it – making dream into reality just happens to be one of the most fulfilling and life-altering actions a person can experience! It is cool to have a black belt – it is fantastic to join your classmates for high level work outs and to help lower belts with their training. And even though you get to "suit up” on class nights and put that belt on for the world to see, you "wear” it all day long in every setting because attaining it changed you. The hard work and perseverance that earned you that belt and later, additional diamonds for the belt, changed you from the inside out. Where before you were a person who thought it would be cool to be a black belt now you are a person who has trained hard, reached for and attained goals, passed milestones and tests to get to that belt and all the knowledge, strength and fitness that came along with it. This black belt is someone who goes after dreams and turns them into reality while others might still be glassy-eyed and wistful. This black belt knows anything is possible! Yes, that is definitely cool.

Can you imagine that day? You have earned your black belt and feel immeasurably proud of yourself. Family members or friends a have shown up to watch you cross that finish line. This victory becomes a part of you for the remainder of your life.

The Simple Secret To Life

I am sure you have heard that there is a lot of bowing in Kung Fu and martial arts in general. We bow before practicing each form and at the beginning and end of class. I have a saying that the secret to life is "Just Bow”. During the hardest workout, you want to stop and rest, but sometimes if you stop you can’t get started again. Starting the next form can sometimes seem like the hardest thing to do. However, since each form starts with a bow, that part is easy. SO I tell me students to just bow, because that’s easy. But then have to start the first moves of the form after they bow and suddenly they are hitting it hard again. But it all started with the easiest of the moves; just a bow.

The same is the case for getting your black belt, or attempting any of the most difficult challenges of your life. If you just take the smallest and simplest step, your journey has begun and you will most likely continue down the path. That smallest step is your first class. So Just Bow

We get excited about the transformative power of Kung Fu, can you tell? J
