Should I take my child to a Shaolin-Do Tournament?

Absolutely!!

I have watched so many kids transform themselves by facing fears and challenges in Shaolin. Win or not they will benefit from this experience. My own daughter has sparred in over 10 tournaments in 6 years. She approaches them with a fun but competitive spirit. So many people say that they could never do something like this. Well my guess is that you joined your child in our school so that they would learn to rise above the crowd and reach for something truly special.

February, 23th Check-in at 9AM. Your child will be finished by 12:00, but you can stay all day if you like to watch all the other events.

What will the kids do?

Forms

Competition will begin promptly at 10AM. The children will be grouped by age and belt rank. All children will be encouraged to perform a empty-hand or weapon kata for their level. They must pick only one form to compete with. They may not compete with a form above their belt rank or extra seminar forms. They will be judged on:

Precision

Power

Speed

Intensity

Medals for 1st-4th place will be awarded at the end.

Sparring

All children must wear hand and foot gear. We also recommend headgear, mouthpiece and groin protection (for boys). These can be purchased at you school or the day of the tournament. Cards with their names will be shuffled and pulled out in pairs for sparring matches. After going through the stack, the cards will be re-shuffled and the process will repeat. After 50 minutes we will take the 4 kids with the best win records and allow them to spar down for 1st-4th place medals.

After all 1st – 4th place medals are awarded, we will award the participation medals to all the kids who did not place.

All Pee-Wee or Pre-K students will be allow to spar but will not be allowed contact. They will not be required to wear sparring equipment.

THE FIRST TIME EVER

To repeat, this is the first time ever that the kids will automatically get to spar more than one round regardless of whether they win. This is a fantastic development and will make for a very good day for your family. Make sure to bring a camcorder to catch all those matches so they can learn from their mistakes for next year.

Final Note

I strongly encourage you to get your child involved in this tournament. I know you and I have the same goals for your kids. To grow as a person, find inner strength and courage, and expand their definition of themselves. Well this is the single best chance to do that. When my daughter Taylor talks with her friends at school about tournaments, they sound frightened of the concept, but there stands my daughter (who used to be shy) saying that it is not that big of a deal. Yet, a very large percentage of the adults in our school would disagree and are also frightened to death of participating in something like this. At the age of 8 years old, Taylor has already moved past some of the fears that plague many adults for life. I wish the same for your children. Help me to get them even more involved in the school so that Shaolin-Do can works it’s special magic on their confidence and self-worth.
