Tournament Guide
Rules and Procedures
Special Pre-K sparring rules. No contact is allowed and kids will receive a first place if they win all their matches, 2nd place if they win at least one match and 3rd place for everything else
Kids, Juniors and Teens Will spar and be able to compete in an open hand & weapon form. All kids will receive a medal of some kind. Kids sparring will follow the same rules as class sparring. Head gear will be required. Some will be available at the tournament to purchase as a greatly discounted price.
Tai Chi Empty hand will be either Yang 24 or 64. The competitor will have 3 minutes to demonstrate. Weapons will be selected from either yang straight or broadsword, again 3 minutes Chen 83 competition. 3 minutes to demonstrate this form.
Sparring (adults) Person with highest score after 90 seconds wins. Hand = 1 point, kick = 2 points and sweep with follow-up = 3 points. Light contact is only allowed. Safety gear is required and head contact is not allowed. In other words, it should feel similar to regular class sparring.
Adult Forms All adults need to pick one form (empty hand or weapon). Forms is of course optional, but I recommend everyone give it try. The forms must be at the students belt level or one level below (the form must be within the standard curriculum). Black belts will be split between 1st degrees and then higher than 1st degrees.
Open Forms Lower belt students who have learned higher level forms can compete in this division. I don't have a time slot nailed down for this yet, but will soon.
Black Belt Continuous Sparring This will consist of 3 rounds each lasting 25 seconds. At the end of each round the judges will vote on which fighter showed dominance during that round. The fight will be won with a cumulative point score. Light head contact (10%) will be allowed and headgear with a plastic face guard will be avaialble at the ring.
Seminars will be open to all students registered for the tournament. There will be at least 3 topics covered.
Because we are holding this at a High School Gymnasium we can have up to 8 rings at once. This allows for more organization and even for the tai chi competition to occur independent of all other events.
